Way Too Excessive and What A Load Of Crap!

No, this isn't a post about the stimulus package...

This is about our playroom and the problem with excessive amounts of toys.
Neat Freaks, look away.

I don't know if your kids are anything like mine, but I have the kind of kids that had tons of toys that were never played with. And I'm the kind of mom who thinks that all the Littlest Pet Shop toys should all live in their very own bin. And the Barbies should all be together in their own bin. And Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head should all be in one bin and so on and so forth. And I'm also the kind of mom who prefers to have the kids' friends play at our house. And my kids' friends are the kind of kids who like to dump all the toys out, but don't play with them and then I'm left to clean up everything and put all the toys back into their proper bins. I'm not the kind of mom who enjoys this. I started thinking about what toys my kids do actually play with. They like their Littlest Pet Shops, their Nintendo DS's, their American Girl Dolls and Webkinz. I was fairly certain that I could get rid of all other toys and they wouldn't really care as long as they kept what they really love. So since I'm the kind of mom who isn't against bribery, I enlisted the help of two new Webkinz that would live on top of the fridge until my kids got rid of almost all their other toys. Brilliant, I know. Meet Pansy the Hummingbird and Bubbles the Seahorse. I couldn't have done it without them.

With their help we were able to get rid of bags and bags of toys. Gone are the Legos. Gone are the Polly Pockets. Gone is the Princess castle. Gone are stacks and stacks of books, games and puzzles. Gone are all the Dora The Explorer toys. Gone are 2 garbage bags full of stuffed animals. Gone are the doll strollers. Gone are 2 toy cash registers. Gone is the train set. And guess what?!? It's been about 2 weeks since I did all this and the kids don't even miss any of those toys.

Here is the load of crap headed for DI.

You can tell from the debris that was swept up that this is a girls playroom. Beads, barrettes, Barbie shoes, oh, and a fake chicken drumstick...all sure signs.

And here are the results. Looks pretty good.

Now, don't feel sorry for my kids, I have vowed to get rid of half of all my stuff, too. All in all, I feel like my kids have learned a valuable lesson about excess. And how anything in excess can be too hard to manage. Hopefully they will remember this. Ha, who am I kidding?

WOW! That's amazing! After my post on kids bedrooms, everyone was asking: what about the toys? I am planning a post on toy organization and if it's okay I would like to link to your post?! It will inspire a lot of people.

The key for us is fewer toys too. People think it's mean to have minimal toys, but we have what they love most...nothing mean about that! It makes them easier to play with and easier to put away. That makes everyone happy!

You are too funny and just like me. Scary. I too feel that every toy needs their own bin but my kids never return them. I am down to a train table without a train, a few books, and 2 little baskets of toys. We don't have a whole room. Good for you!

Oh my gosh! I am totally inspired. I'm going to make this my project for tomorrow since I'm working on simplifying anyhow. My kids have way too many rinky-dinky toys that never get played with. Yet they are sure to leave them on the ground at all times. Once I took photos of toys, laminated them and stuck them to the bins, i.e. transformers, lego's , etc. etc. It didn't work. I guess it's time for some spring cleaning! Thanks Becky:)

Oh your my inspiration!!! This is a project that I must tackle tomorrow. My playroom is also filled with CRAP! My kids don't play with any of it, just dump it out and then move on. AHHH it drives me nuts! Wish me luck!

The before and after pictures are amazing Good job did that take a long time? Your car too it is totally full so worth the 2 little Webkins that take up so little space. I love seperate bins for all the toys too.... but I seem to be the only one who knows how to put them back that way? Don't you hate when you have to empty all the bins and start over because the kids didn't put them away right? Maybe your kids don't do that?

Nice work... looks beautiful! I'm totally struggling with this. Just when I think Brea has out grown a toy and I'm about to put it way in a bin for the next kiddie she starts playing with that toy all the time... so I never know if I can put anything away! And Brea loves to dump out her buckets and bins... so during nap time and after bed time I get to separate it all- YEAH! I just need to follow your example and do it- you're right... she'll never know. At least I hope she won't!

Way to go Beck I love this, my toy room is a wreck all the time and I feel the same way. Rob is contantly saying we need to get rid of so many things. We do. half of it isn't played with. I guess I should box up some of it that I know the next kid may like then toss the rest. It looks awesome, way to go!

You are my inspiration on this. I did it when we moved, but we need to do it again. It is amazing how many toys they have and how few they really play with. I think I have enough stuffed animals to run a zoo.. and Allie keeps winning them on those stupid crane machines. LOL
